Message from the Dean
To promote cutting-edge research in the field of medical and life sciences and ensure international growth and competitiveness, it is necessary to introduce advanced research equipment, which are used globally in these field. Therefore, Medical Research Support Center at Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University, was founded in November 2011. This center provides an organized environment for sharing cutting-edge research equipment within and outside of Kyoto University and providing technical support for advanced research. This center initially had five divisions, including the Division for DNA Sequencing Analysis (later renamed as the Division for DNA Sequencing and Bioinformatics), Drug Discovery Base Core Laboratory (later reorganized as the Drug Discovery Center), Division for Mass Spectrometry, Live Imaging Center, and Division for Mouse Behavior Analysis. With the gradual expansion of activities till May 2019, various research supports including outsourced analysis services were improved, such as the Division for Small Animal MRI and Division of Medicinal Chemistry were opened.
To help young researchers and graduate students acquire the skills for efficiently conducting the research, each division organizes training courses on equipment usage and practical workshops. In addition, various symposiums are held in collaboration with other departments and affiliated support facilities outside Kyoto University. Furthermore, in 2019, as one of the On-site Laboratory, Kyoto University Research Center San Diego, was established in University of California San Diego, USA, thereby extending the scope of activities overseas. Additionally, MRSC developed and introduced KUMaCo as an online management system in 2020 that enabled users to register to facilities, apply for and reserve equipment and request conduct outsourced analyses.
Presently, we have expanded our framework of shared equipment usage for research in the field of life sciences and launched iSAL for providing equipment support to facilitate cooperation and efficient use of equipment of the five departments in Kyoto University in the South-West district (Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Biostudies, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute for Life and Medical Sciences, and ASHBi). In iSAL, cutting-edge equipment and analysis technology are provided in all departments by KUMaCo, which provides support for conducting research at par with the world’s highest level.
Moreover, all researchers and other staffs of iSAL will continue their efforts to expand users and help in promoting research. Therefore, we request your continuous support.
